Auto populating form fields

Hello,
I'm using PHP to bring in data from a mysql database. easy enough so far. i have many form fields in my form that could be automatically 'filled' with data IF the user selected something from a drop-down menu...however i'm unsure how to accomplish this with AJAX. I know it somehow involves making calls to the database and filling in data based on what it finds...but how?
